On hearing this recording, it may surprise the listener to learn that the three sonatas BWV 1027-1029 were not originally conceived with the cello in mind at all, despite its evident suitability for these works. Instead, they were written for the viola da gamba, a bass instrument that differs from the 'cello in a number of fundamental ways” it features a fretted fingerboard and six (sometimes seven) strings.
